Ranked #746 in Arts , #14,126 overall

Why Tannat is a healthy wine

It contains lots of straight-chain B-type oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) that are great for your heart and arteries.

Tannat is the red wine variety used in the Madiran appellation in South West France where heart disease is very low despite a diet rich in fats.

It was once thought that a substance called resveratrol was the active ingredient in red wines making us healthier, but it is now believed that other substances are more important.

The Top Five Reasons Tannat is the Healthiest Wine

  • Tannat is a red wine variety from South Western France
  • It makes big juicy wines of Madiran. They just love this wine variety in Uruguay (true!) It was introduced by Basque immigrants in the nineteenth century
  • A dozen or so of the smarter wine makers in Australia use it
  • The role of resveratrol in promoting health is now in dispute, but Tannat does have health giving properties. See this article for the good and bad news about resveratrol
  • Tannat wine is the best source of procyanadins, the polyphenols which help keep your arteries healthy thus preventing heart disease, stroke and diabetes
